Psalm 24

Of David. A psalm.

¹The earth is the Lord’s,^(A) and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it;^(B)
²for he founded it on the seas
and established it on the waters.^(C)

³Who may ascend the mountain^(D) of the Lord?
    Who may stand in his holy place?^(E)
⁴The one who has clean hands^(F) and a pure heart,^(G)
    who does not trust in an idol^(H)
    or swear by a false god.^[a]

⁵They will receive blessing^(I) from the Lord
and vindication^(J) from God their Savior.
⁶Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek your face,^(K) God of Jacob.^[b]^[c]

⁷Lift up your heads, you gates;^(L)
    be lifted up, you ancient doors,
    that the King^(M) of glory^(N) may come in.^(O)
⁸Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,^(P)
    the Lord mighty in battle.^(Q)
⁹Lift up your heads, you gates;
    lift them up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
¹⁰Who is he, this King of glory?
    The Lord Almighty^(R)—
    he is the King of glory.

The Israelites Leave Sinai

¹¹On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year,^(A) the cloud lifted^(B) from above the tabernacle of the covenant law.^(C) ¹²Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran.^(D) ¹³They set out, this first time, at the Lord’s command through Moses.^(E)

¹⁴The divisions of the camp of Judah went first, under their standard.^(F) Nahshon son of Amminadab^(G) was in command. ¹⁵Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe^(H) of Issachar,^(I) ¹⁶and Eliab son of Helon^(J) was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun.^(K) ¹⁷Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and Merarites, who carried it, set out.^(L)

¹⁸The divisions of the camp of Reuben^(M) went next, under their standard.^(N) Elizur son of Shedeur^(O) was in command. ¹⁹Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the tribe of Simeon,^(P) ²⁰and Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of Gad.^(Q) ²¹Then the Kohathites^(R) set out, carrying the holy things.^(S) The tabernacle was to be set up before they arrived.^(T)

²²The divisions of the camp of Ephraim^(U) went next, under their standard. Elishama son of Ammihud^(V) was in command. ²³Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of Manasseh,^(W) ²⁴and Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of Benjamin.^(X)

²⁵Finally, as the rear guard^(Y) for all the units, the divisions of the camp of Dan set out under their standard. Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai^(Z) was in command. ²⁶Pagiel son of Okran was over the division of the tribe of Asher,^(AA) ²⁷and Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of Naphtali.^(AB) ²⁸This was the order of march for the Israelite divisions as they set out.

²⁹Now Moses said to Hobab^(AC) son of Reuel^(AD) the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law,^(AE) “We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’^(AF) Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”

³⁰He answered, “No, I will not go;^(AG) I am going back to my own land and my own people.^(AH)”

³¹But Moses said, “Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.^(AI) ³²If you come with us, we will share with you^(AJ) whatever good things the Lord gives us.^(AK)”

³³So they set out^(AL) from the mountain of the Lord and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of the Lord^(AM) went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest.^(AN) ³⁴The cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.^(AO)

³⁵Whenever the ark set out, Moses said,

“Rise up,^(AP) Lord!
May your enemies be scattered;^(AQ)
may your foes flee before you.^(AR)”^(AS)

³⁶Whenever it came to rest, he said,

“Return,^(AT) Lord,
to the countless thousands of Israel.^(AU)”

The Birth of John the Baptist

⁵⁷When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. ⁵⁸Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.

⁵⁹On the eighth day they came to circumcise^(A) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, ⁶⁰but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”^(B)

⁶¹They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”

⁶²Then they made signs^(C) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. ⁶³He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”^(D) ⁶⁴Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,^(E) praising God. ⁶⁵All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea^(F) people were talking about all these things. ⁶⁶Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.^(G)

Zechariah’s Song

⁶⁷His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit^(H) and prophesied:^(I)

⁶⁸“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,^(J)
    because he has come to his people and redeemed them.^(K)
⁶⁹He has raised up a horn^[a]^(L) of salvation for us
    in the house of his servant David^(M)
⁷⁰(as he said through his holy prophets of long ago),^(N)
⁷¹salvation from our enemies
    and from the hand of all who hate us—
⁷²to show mercy to our ancestors^(O)
    and to remember his holy covenant,^(P)
⁷³    the oath he swore to our father Abraham:^(Q)
⁷⁴to rescue us from the hand of our enemies,
    and to enable us to serve him^(R) without fear^(S)
⁷⁵    in holiness and righteousness^(T) before him all our days.

⁷⁶And you, my child, will be called a prophet^(U) of the Most High;^(V)
    for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,^(W)
⁷⁷to give his people the knowledge of salvation
    through the forgiveness of their sins,^(X)
⁷⁸because of the tender mercy of our God,
    by which the rising sun^(Y) will come to us from heaven
⁷⁹to shine on those living in darkness
    and in the shadow of death,^(Z)
to guide our feet into the path of peace.”^(AA)
